Die to Self
By Sidney Savoie
Being a lay Catholic missionary has enabled me to be conscious of my need for God. It has also helped me to recognize the need for God that exists within all of my brothers and sisters. Every day that passes, my missionary experiences remind me that the status quo is not ok.
I must feed the hungry, heal the sick, visit the lonely, and spread the joy and hope of Jesus. As a man of God, I cannot imagine my life or a world without missions. It has helped me to die to self. It has helped me to be patient and to trust God. It has led to amazing ministry opportunities. Through missions I’ve experienced moments of great joy and great sorrow.
If it weren’t for missions, I wouldn’t know what it means to be a man. And if there’s one thing our church and our world needs, its real men. Men who are willing to lay down their lives like Christ laid himself down for us.
Please take the time to pray and consider whether or not God is calling you to be a missionary. I’ve never regretted the time I spent discerning missions. Not one day has passed by that I ever regretted becoming a missionary. I promise that you too will not regret it.
